Which makes the practical question not "is it worth doing" but "can I actually get it booked and get through the appointment without speaking Chinese."

That is what we handle.

Why this fits a business trip when other treatments don't

Most dental work does not fit a short trip. Implants take about four months across two visits. Orthodontics takes years. Crowns take days.

Whitening is the exception, and the reasons are worth being specific about:

  • It is a single appointment. No return visit, no temporary anything.
  • It is roughly an hour. That is a genuine gap in most working days — between sessions, before a dinner, on an arrival day.
  • There is no recovery period. Some sensitivity for a day or two is normal; it does not stop you doing anything.
  • It has no effect on flying. You can walk out and go to the airport.

If you are in Shenzhen for a conference, a supplier visit, or a summit week, this is the treatment that fits.

What actually happens in the appointment

  1. Examination — a quick check that whitening is appropriate. If you have untreated decay, active gum disease or exposed roots, whitening is not the first thing to do, and we will tell you that rather than proceed.
  2. Cleaning if needed — whitening works on clean enamel. If there is plaque or calculus, that comes first.
  3. Gum protection — a barrier applied to protect soft tissue.
  4. Whitening — the gel is applied and light-activated in cycles.
  5. Aftercare briefing — what to avoid for the next 48 hours, and how to maintain the result.

The honest part: results vary by what caused the staining. Whitening works well on extrinsic staining from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. It works less well on intrinsic discolouration — tetracycline staining, fluorosis, or a single dark tooth after root canal treatment. And it does not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or composite fillings, which is a common and expensive surprise. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, discuss the sequence before you whiten, not after.

Concentration, and why we use 17%

There is a real trade-off between whitening gel concentration, speed of result, and sensitivity. Higher concentration gets there faster and is more likely to leave you with sensitive teeth for a day or two.

We use a 17% in-office system. If you want the detail on how that compares to higher-concentration protocols, we have written it up separately: 40% vs 17% cold light whitening in China.

How long it lasts

Somewhere between six months and three years, depending almost entirely on you.

The variables are the obvious ones — coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and how consistently you clean your teeth. The 48 hours immediately after treatment matter more than the rest, because enamel is temporarily more porous; avoid strongly coloured food and drink during that window.

Top-up options and at-home maintenance are discussed at the appointment.

Cost context

Professional in-office whitening in China is considerably cheaper than in the United States, the United Kingdom or Australia — this is one of the clearest price gaps in dentistry, largely because it is a standardised procedure with little variation in what you are actually buying.

This page is about one thing: getting it done in Shenzhen, quickly, in English.

Coming from Hong Kong

Shenzhen borders Hong Kong, with two main land crossings connecting directly to the metro network. Mainland pricing applies on this side, which is why cross-border traffic for routine dental work is steady.

For a single-session treatment like whitening, this works well — there is no follow-up appointment to schedule and nothing to go wrong after you cross back. Build the border crossing into your timing; it is a separate immigration process.

Combine it with something else

Whitening pairs naturally with other single-visit treatments on the same trip:

  • Scale and polish — from $29, and a sensible precursor to whitening anyway
  • Composite fillings — $139 per tooth, up to 3–4 teeth in a sitting
  • Treatment planning consultation — free, with a written plan and quote, if you are considering something larger

If you are thinking about a broader cosmetic change rather than just shade, see smile makeover options in Shenzhen.

Frequently asked questions

How long does teeth whitening take in Shenzhen?

One session of 60–90 minutes. There is no return visit and no recovery period — you can fly the same day.

How much does professional teeth whitening cost in Shenzhen?

$169 USD for in-office whitening, the same price across our partner cities. Confirm current pricing on the product page before booking.

Can I get it done at short notice?

Appointments within three days are available as an Urgent option on the service (+US$100). If we cannot secure the window, half that fee is refunded. Book further ahead during major events, when the city is busier.

Will the appointment be in English?

Yes — booking, registration, the consultation and your documentation. This is not a safe assumption if you approach a clinic independently.

Will it whiten my crowns, veneers or fillings?

No. Whitening only affects natural enamel. Existing restorations keep their original shade, which can leave them looking darker or lighter than the teeth around them. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, raise this before treatment — the sequencing matters.

Does it hurt?

Most people experience some sensitivity for a day or two afterwards. It is temporary. Tell the clinician if you already have sensitive teeth, as the protocol can be adjusted.

How many shades will I get?

Typically several, but it depends on what is causing the staining. Coffee, tea, wine and tobacco staining responds well. Intrinsic discolouration — tetracycline, fluorosis, a dark tooth after root canal — responds less predictably, and we will say so at the examination rather than after.

How long do the results last?

Six months to three years, driven mostly by diet and oral hygiene. The first 48 hours matter most — avoid strongly coloured food and drink.

Can I have whitening if I have gum disease or untreated decay?

Not as the first step. Those are treated first. If that is the situation, we will tell you at the examination.

Can I do whitening and a health checkup on the same trip?

Yes, and it is common. Tell us both when you enquire so the scheduling works.
