Health Checkup in Shanghai for Foreigners: English Reports, One Morning

Published: June 2026 · Last reviewed: August 2026 · Next review: November 2026

A health checkup in Shanghai works like this: you arrive fasting at a Grade 3A teaching hospital at 07:30, work through bloods, imaging, ultrasound, ECG and a physician consult, and you are finished before lunch. The report is compiled, translated and physician-reviewed afterwards — typically 2–3 weeks, fastest about 1 week. Shanghai’s published prices start at US$399 for Men’s Essential, with a Personalized Screening quoted case by case around your own history — coordinator and English reports included. Citizens of some countries can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit. Medical treatment is not on that list, so check the right entry route for your passport with the Chinese embassy or consulate before you book. Tell us who it is for and when you can travel; we send a written quote before you pay.

Why Shanghai

Why do your health checkup in Shanghai?

The deepest bench of top-tier teaching hospitals

No other Chinese city packs as many century-old university hospitals into a few metro stops. Ruijin Hospital opened in 1907 as Sainte-Marie (Guangci) Hospital and is now the flagship of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Huashan Hospital (Fudan University) was founded the same year by the Red Cross Society of China; Changhai Hospital has anchored the Naval Medical University since 1949. For a screening patient that means: if a result needs a specialist, the specialist is in the same building or the next district. Shanghai’s international-patient departments are also the most mature in mainland China — bilingual intake and English paperwork are routine.

Two airports, both 240-hour visa-free transit ports

PVG and SHA are both designated ports for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit, and Shanghai has more direct long-haul flights from Europe and North America than any other mainland city. PVG to the centre is 45–60 minutes; SHA is 30–45. Citizens of some countries can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit. Medical treatment is not on that list, so check the right entry route for your passport with the Chinese embassy or consulate before you book.

Same tier prices, wider menu

On our published list the four standard tiers cost the same in Shanghai as in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. What differs is the menu around them: only Shanghai lets you pair a Western panel with a TCM constitution assessment at a university TCM hospital in the same trip, and Shanghai is where we can add a whole-body PET-CT. Compare the full list in our China health check hub.

Where it takes place

Ruijin Hospital — Shanghai’s century-old teaching hospital

Ruijin Hospital (瑞金医院), 197 Ruijin Er Road, Huangpu District, is a Grade 3A general hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, nationally known for endocrinology and haematology. Imaging on site includes 3.0T MRI and 256-slice CT; sedated (painless) gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be added. You arrive at the centre at 07:30; if you have added an English-speaking medical companion, they meet you there. Best for executive checkups, complex histories, and anyone who may need a same-hospital specialist afterwards. South Shaanxi Road metro (Lines 1, 10, 12) is a four-minute walk — see our Ruijin checkup package guide.

Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine

Yueyang Hospital (岳阳中西医结合医院), affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, grew out of the 1952 “Fifth Outpatient Department” of Shanghai’s leading TCM physicians, took its current form in 1976 and was rated Grade 3A in 1994 — Shanghai’s only nationally designated key hospital for integrated Chinese and Western medicine. The Western baseline is done first; a TCM physician then reads pulse, tongue and questionnaire and classifies your constitution — phlegm-damp, qi-stagnation, damp-heat and others — with dietary and lifestyle guidance. Acupuncture or tuina can follow the same afternoon. Try the free TCM body constitution test first, or read about the Yueyang physical + TCM checkup.

Other Shanghai Grade 3A options

Beyond Ruijin and Yueyang, Shanghai’s other Grade 3A options include Huashan Hospital (Fudan University, Jing’an) — China’s national medical centre for neurology and infectious diseases, ranked first nationally in dermatology — and at Changhai Hospital (Naval Medical University, Yangpu), whose digestive endoscopy centre is regarded as the country’s leading ERCP and endoscopic-ultrasound unit and hosts the Shanghai Institute of Pancreatic Diseases. Choose Huashan if a neurological or skin concern is driving the checkup, Changhai for a screening endoscopy, Zhongshan Hospital (Fudan) for a cardiology-led panel. Tell us what is driving the checkup and we recommend the hospital; an English-speaking medical companion can be added at any of them.

Shanghai-specific add-ons

Whole-body PET-CT — from US$1,499 (Shanghai featured service). A nuclear-medicine scan for people with specific risk factors or a physician’s recommendation, not a routine add-on; quoted and booked through us, with the centre, preparation and total confirmed in writing before payment. For Shanghai, the scan range is confirmed per the hospital’s protocol at booking.
TCM constitution assessment at Yueyang — pulse, tongue and questionnaire typing with an English summary; priced per hospital and shown in your quote.
Sedated gastroscopy + colonoscopy at Ruijin or Changhai — see the GI and digestive screening package, US$799 with tumour markers.
Cardiovascular deep screen — ECG, echocardiogram and coronary CTA: cardiovascular screening, US$499 with coronary CTA included (coronary CTA is also available on its own for US$300).
Low-dose lung CT with spirometry — lung and respiratory deep screening, US$399.

How Shanghai pricing compares to other cities

The standard tiers are priced identically across our four main cities, so the choice is about hospitals and logistics. Beijing’s named-hospital option at Peking Union Medical College Hospital starts at US$1,499. Shenzhen suits Hong Kong residents crossing for the day (Shenzhen health checkup packages); Guangzhou suits travellers routing through Southeast Asia (Guangzhou health screening options); Shanghai suits direct flyers from Europe or North America who want the widest hospital choice or TCM in the same trip.

How it works

From enquiry to English reports: your Shanghai checkup timeline.

1

Enquire (free, reply within 24 hours)

Send the age, sex, main health concerns and preferred dates for everyone being screened. We reply within one working day with a recommended Shanghai hospital and tier — Ruijin for an executive or complex-history checkup, Yueyang if you want the TCM component. Checkups in Shanghai can be arranged any day of the week, Monday to Sunday. Prefer a form? Use the screening intake.

2

Written confirmation before payment

One document lists the hospital, tier, exact tests, all-inclusive total, fasting instructions with clock times (“finish dinner by 20:00, water only after 22:00”) and what to bring — passport, prior reports, medication list. Payment happens only after you approve it.

3

Checkup morning in Shanghai

07:30: you arrive at the hospital entrance and check in at the health-management centre or international department. If you have added an English-speaking medical companion (US$50 per half day with a checkup package), they meet you there and check you in. Bloods and urine first while fasting, then imaging, ultrasound, ECG and the internal-medicine consult in the order the Shanghai centre runs that day; sedated endoscopy, if booked, comes last. Normally done by late morning. With sedated endoscopy, the hospital asks you, as the patient, to sign its consent forms yourself. Our sedated endoscopy packages include a SinoCareLink medical companion, who stays with you until you have recovered from sedation. The hospital will also ask you not to drive after sedation; plan for 24 hours without driving.

4

English reports and follow-up

Reports are compiled and physician-reviewed by the hospital, then professionally translated: expect them in 2–3 weeks, about 1 week at the fastest. If something is flagged, we can arrange a remote consultation or a same-hospital specialist appointment — we never interpret results ourselves.

Honest fit check

Is a Shanghai health checkup right for you?

Ideal for

✓Business travellers and expats who want it done in one morning in the city with the most direct international flights.
✓Anyone with a complex or chronic history who wants a teaching hospital such as Ruijin behind the screening.
✓People who want a Western panel plus a TCM constitution assessment in one trip.
✓Short-stay visitors who want to combine a Shanghai trip with a screening — check your entry route in our China visa guide.

Not the best fit if

—You only want a single test — book that item directly.
—You need results the same day. Reports take 2–3 weeks; no hospital in our network delivers same-day translated reports.
—You would rather cross from Hong Kong for a few hours — Shenzhen is the better base.
Real itineraries

Shanghai health checkup scenarios.

The Hong Kong executive on a 48-hour trip

Flies HKG–SHA Friday evening (about 2.5 hours), stays on Huaihai Road. Saturday 07:30 at Ruijin for Men’s Premium plus a TCM constitution assessment; done by late morning, lunch in Xintiandi, the Bund in the afternoon, flight home Sunday. Report by email two to three weeks later.

The US expat based in China

Annual baseline, read against Western reference ranges. Books Women’s Premium at Ruijin and asks for a remote consultation once the English report lands so she can discuss it with her doctor at home.

The family visiting from Europe

Parents in their late sixties visiting their son on visa-free entry. Two Personalized Screenings built around their histories — bone density and carotid ultrasound for one, coronary CTA for the other — at Ruijin on a Tuesday morning, then Yu Garden and the Bund. See the 3-day Shanghai itinerary with a checkup.

Visa-free health trip

Getting to Shanghai for your health checkup.

Visa options. The 240-hour visa-free transit admits citizens of a published list of countries for up to 10 days if they arrive at a designated port such as PVG or SHA with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. 30-day visa-free entry covers a separate list of nationalities with no onward-ticket condition. Everyone else applies for a tourist (L) visa; our booking confirmation can support it. Rules change — check the current country list on our 240-hour visa-free transit page and confirm with the Chinese embassy or your airline before flying.
PVG → Ruijin
50–70 minutes. Maglev to Longyang Road (8 minutes) then metro to South Shaanxi Road, or a taxi of about 50 minutes outside rush hour.
SHA → Ruijin
30–45 minutes. Metro Line 10 runs from Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 direct to South Shaanxi Road; a taxi takes about 30 minutes.
Where to stay
Huaihai Road or Jing’an Temple — 10–15 minutes from Ruijin, with the Bund and Xintiandi in reach for the afternoon.

The rest of your day. Your checkup ends before lunch. Xintiandi is one stop from Ruijin on Line 10, Yu Garden and the Bund a few stops further, Tianzifang a 20-minute walk. Most patients fold the checkup into a two- or three-day stay — see our medical tourism in Shanghai guide.
