Before your coronary CTA scan

• Fasting: no food for 4 hours before the scan; no caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola) for 12 hours beforehand — caffeine raises your heart rate.
• If you take metformin: it must be stopped before an iodinated-contrast scan as directed by your doctor — tell us when you book.
• Heart rate & rhythm: clear images need a calm resting heart rate (ideally below 70 bpm). If it is higher on the day, the doctor may give a short-acting medication to bring it down. A frequently irregular heartbeat can make CCTA unsuitable — tell us about any arrhythmia history in advance.
• On the day: arrive about 20 minutes early to rest, remove metal items around the chest, and empty your bladder before the scan. A small IV line (usually in the right arm) is placed for the contrast agent.
• Breath-hold: you will be asked to hold a gentle breath for about 10 seconds during the scan — practising beforehand makes it smoother.
• On-day assessment: a brief safety evaluation (heart rate, rhythm, relevant history) takes place before the scan; in rare cases the scan may be adjusted or rescheduled if conditions are not met on the day.

After your scan

• Drink about 2 litres of water, spread over the next 24 hours, to help your kidneys flush out the contrast agent (unless your fluid intake is medically restricted).
• Delayed reactions are uncommon but possible — if you notice a rash, itching, dizziness or nausea after the scan, tell medical staff or contact us promptly.
• If you take metformin, restart it only as directed by your doctor — this may involve a kidney-function check after the scan.
