China 144-Hour / 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit: How to Use It
Share

China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit scheme is one of the most generous short-stay policies in the world. If you are planning visa free travel to china for business, tourism, or medical treatment, this is the gateway — often more flexible than the 30-day scheme and available to travelers from 54 countries including the US, UK, and India. This guide explains exactly how to use it.
What Changed in December 2024
The previous 144-hour transit scheme covered 54 countries at 39 ports. In December 2024, China expanded this to 240 hours (10 days) at 60+ ports. For eligible travelers, this is one of the most powerful tools for visa free china entry without an embassy visit.

Why 240-Hour Transit Works for Medical Tourism
- Day 1: Arrival, hotel, rest
- Day 2: Consultations, intake
- Day 3-4: Full body checkup or dental procedures
- Day 5-6: Results review, follow-up
- Day 7-9: Tourism, recovery, optional additional procedures
- Day 10: Departure to third country
Combining with Hong Kong
Fly to Shenzhen or Guangzhou, get treatment done, then train or short-fly to Hong Kong for your "third country" exit. Hong Kong then serves as your departure point back home. The Shenzhen-Hong Kong express train is 15 minutes. See our Shenzhen health checkup guide.
