About Shingrix (Recombinant Zoster Vaccine)
Shingrix is the modern recombinant zoster vaccine developed by GSK, replacing the older Zostavax live-attenuated vaccine. Recommended by CDC, FDA, and Chinese CDC for adults aged 50 and older. Efficacy: 90%+ protection against shingles (herpes zoster) and postherpetic neuralgia, with durability beyond 10 years in published data.
Dosing schedule
- Dose 1: any time after age 50
- Dose 2: 2 to 6 months after Dose 1
- If Dose 2 is given less than 4 weeks after Dose 1, repeat is required
Who should receive Shingrix?
- Adults aged 50 and older — universally recommended
- Adults 19 and older who are immunocompromised due to disease or therapy
- Previously vaccinated with Zostavax — still recommended to receive Shingrix series for stronger protection
- Previously had shingles — Shingrix still recommended after recovery
Who should NOT receive Shingrix?
- Severe allergy to any component of the vaccine
- Current shingles episode (wait until rash fully resolves)
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (defer)
- Moderate-to-severe acute illness with or without fever (defer until recovery)
Pre-vaccination guidance
- Eat a light meal beforehand; do not vaccinate on an empty stomach
- Bring your passport or valid Chinese ID
- Bring records of any prior shingles or chickenpox vaccinations
- Inform the clinician of any allergies, current medications, immunocompromised conditions, or pregnancy
- Wear loose-sleeved clothing for easy upper-arm access
Post-vaccination guidance
- Stay at the clinic for 30 minutes after the injection for allergy observation
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
- Mild side effects are common: injection-site pain/redness/swelling, fatigue, mild fever, myalgia. Usually resolves within 2-3 days.
- Seek immediate care if you develop high fever (>39°C), severe rash, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling
- Keep the injection site clean and dry; do not scrub
- Schedule Dose 2 with SinoCareLink 2-6 months later

How to book
