The Nine TCM Body Constitutions
China’s national standard (Classification and Determination of Constitution in TCM) recognizes nine body-constitution types. Your analysis identifies which one(s) best describe you and the imbalances to watch, so your wellness plan can be tailored to your type:
- Balanced (Pinghe) — the well-regulated, healthy baseline.
- Qi-deficiency (Qixu) — low energy, tires easily, catches colds readily.
- Yang-deficiency (Yangxu) — feels cold easily, prefers warmth.
- Yin-deficiency (Yinxu) — tends toward dryness and internal heat.
- Phlegm-dampness (Tanshi) — heavier build and sluggishness; in TCM, traditionally associated with tendencies toward metabolic patterns (“xiaoke”, akin to blood-sugar concerns) and chest discomfort (“xiongbi”).
- Damp-heat (Shire) — oily skin and breakouts; traditionally linked with skin eruptions, jaundice-type patterns and urinary (“lin”) patterns.
- Blood-stasis (Xueyu) — sluggish circulation, bruises easily.
- Qi-stagnation (Qiyu) — stress-sensitive and low mood; traditionally associated with throat-tightness (“globus / meihe qi”) and mood/depression patterns.
- Special / Allergic (Tebing) — allergy-prone, sensitive constitution.
Certain constitutions are also linked to specific meridians — for example, phlegm-dampness and qi-stagnation patterns frequently involve the Spleen meridian. This is a traditional TCM wellness framework for guidance and prevention, and complements — but does not replace — Western medical diagnosis.

⏱️ Planning an in-person TCM consultation in China? If the doctor prescribes custom herbal medicine, decoction (preparation) usually takes until the next day — plan to stay 1–2 extra days in the city so you can collect your herbal prescription before flying home.
