Cervical cancer and HPV screening in China

The HPV Test You've Been Putting Off: Get It Done in China for $159 — No Insurance Needed

If you’re a woman over 25, you already know you should be getting regular cervical cancer screening. You’ve probably also been putting it off.

Not because you don’t care. But because the system makes it complicated, expensive, and — for many women — deeply uncomfortable.

In the United States, a combined HPV typing test and cervical TCT without insurance typically costs $150–$400. If you’re insured but haven’t met your deductible, you might still pay most of that out-of-pocket. Then you wait 2–4 weeks for results. And the experience itself — the clinical setting, the physician, the vulnerability of the exam — can be anxiety-inducing enough that millions of women simply skip it.

We’d like to offer a different path.

The $159 Cervical Cancer Screening Package: What’s Included

Our Cervical Cancer Screening Specialty Package includes two critical tests for a single all-in price of $159:

1. HPV Genotyping (23 subtypes)

This test identifies which specific HPV subtypes are present — not just whether HPV is “positive” or “negative.” This distinction matters enormously. Of the 200+ known HPV types, only about 14 are classified as high-risk (oncogenic), with types 16 and 18 responsible for approximately 70% of all cervical cancers worldwide. Knowing which type you carry determines whether you need immediate follow-up or can safely return to routine surveillance.

2. Cervical TCT (Liquid-Based Cytology)

The ThinPrep cytology test examines cervical cells for precancerous changes (dysplasia) and early-stage cancer. It’s significantly more sensitive than conventional Pap smears, with detection rates for high-grade lesions exceeding 90% compared to roughly 50–60% for traditional Pap methods. This is the same technology used at leading US academic medical centers.

Why These Two Tests Together Matter More Than Either Alone

International clinical guidelines — including those from ASCCP and WHO — increasingly recommend co-testing (HPV + cytology) as the gold standard for cervical cancer screening. Here’s why:

  • HPV typing tells you the cause. If you test positive for HPV-16 or HPV-18, your risk of progression to cervical cancer is substantially higher — even if your cytology is currently normal. This finding triggers earlier, more intensive surveillance.
  • TCT tells you the effect. Cervical cell abnormalities may appear even when HPV typing is negative. A normal TCT result alongside a positive HPV test gives you reassurance that no cellular damage has occurred yet.
  • Together, they catch what either alone would miss. Studies consistently show that co-testing detects significantly more high-grade cervical lesions than either test alone, reducing the false-negative rate to below 5%.

At $159 for both tests, our package delivers the co-testing gold standard at a price that’s less than what most American women pay for just one of the two tests.

For context: Planned Parenthood’s listed price for a Pap test + HPV screening in major metropolitan areas typically falls in the $150–$350 range, and that’s at a non-profit. Private gynecology practices in Manhattan or Central London routinely charge $300–$500+ for the same combination.

Wait Times: The Other Barrier

In the US, scheduling a gynecological exam for screening purposes often involves a 3–8 week wait, depending on provider and location. Results then take an additional 2–4 weeks.

In the UK under the NHS, cervical screening invitations are sent every 3–5 years, but additional tests outside the standard schedule face long waits or private fees of £200–£500.

At our partner hospitals in China:

  • Appointment available: within 3–7 business days
  • Tests completed: in a single clinic visit (approximately 30–45 minutes)
  • Results delivered: within 3 business days, with English translation

A Exam Designed Around Women’s Comfort

We understand that cervical screening is, for many women, the most emotionally difficult routine medical examination. The vulnerability, the clinical setting, the physical discomfort — these are real barriers, not minor inconveniences. We’ve designed our service to address them directly.

Female Physicians, Always

Every cervical cancer screening in our program is performed by a female gynecologist. This is not a request you need to make — it’s our default arrangement. We recognize that for many women, particularly those from conservative religious or cultural backgrounds (Muslim, Hindu, Orthodox Christian, and others), having a male physician perform an intimate gynecological exam is unacceptable. Even for women without specific religious constraints, studies consistently show higher comfort levels, better communication, and more thorough examination outcomes when the examining physician is female.

Our female gynecologists are board-certified specialists with extensive clinical experience — they perform hundreds of cervical screening procedures per month, combining technical expertise with interpersonal sensitivity.

Language Is Never a Barrier

You don’t need to speak Chinese. Every patient is accompanied by a bilingual health coordinator who is present throughout your appointment — from check-in through the examination to result review. Our coordinators speak English and several additional languages (French, Arabic, Malay, and others depending on location), ensuring that you can communicate directly with your physician and understand every instruction and finding.

Your written report is delivered in both Chinese and English, clearly formatted for easy sharing with your home country gynecologist or primary care physician.

Privacy and Dignity

Our examination rooms are private, well-lit, and equipped with modern gynecological examination tables designed for patient comfort. You are never left waiting exposed. The examination itself is performed efficiently — typically 5–10 minutes for the specimen collection — and you are immediately covered and offered a moment to dress before any conversation about findings begins.

Who Should Get This Screening?

The $159 Cervical Cancer Screening Package is recommended for:

  • Women 25 and older with any history of sexual activity
  • Women who have never had an HPV test — if your previous screening included only a Pap smear, you have not been tested for HPV subtypes
  • Women with a previous HPV-positive result who need follow-up typing to determine whether the infection has cleared or persists with a high-risk subtype
  • Women over 30 especially — co-testing (HPV + TCT) is the recommended standard for this age group
  • Any woman who has postponed screening due to cost, discomfort, or access barriers — this package removes all three

The Upgrade Option: $259 Women’s Health Package

For women who want a more comprehensive assessment beyond cervical screening, our $259 Gynecology Specialty Package adds four additional examinations:

Item $159 Package $259 Package
HPV genotyping (23 subtypes)
Cervical TCT
Breast ultrasound (color Doppler)
Uterine & adnexal ultrasound
Vaginal discharge analysis
Comprehensive gynecological examination

Why the additional tests matter:

Breast ultrasound is the primary screening tool for breast abnormalities in women under 40 (where mammography is less effective due to breast density), and a valuable supplemental tool for women of any age. In the US, a breast ultrasound without insurance typically costs $150–$500.

Uterine & adnexal (ovary) ultrasound evaluates the uterus, endometrial lining, and ovaries for structural abnormalities — ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, and early signs of adnexal masses. Many of these conditions are asymptomatic until they become clinically significant.

Vaginal discharge analysis identifies bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections that may be asymptomatic or causing subtle symptoms. Recurrent infections can indicate underlying conditions that deserve further investigation.

When to Choose $159 vs. $259

Choose $159 if:

  • You specifically need cervical cancer screening and have no other gynecological concerns
  • You’re under 30 with no breast symptoms, no pelvic pain, and no menstrual irregularities
  • You’ve had a recent breast/pelvic ultrasound elsewhere and just need updated HPV/TCT data

Choose $259 if:

  • You’re over 30 (breast and pelvic screening becomes increasingly important with age)
  • You have any breast symptoms — lump, tenderness, skin changes, nipple discharge
  • You experience pelvic pain, menstrual irregularities, or changes in vaginal discharge
  • You have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • You’ve never had a comprehensive gynecological assessment and want a thorough baseline

What Happens After Your Results?

Within 3 business days, you receive a detailed written report in English covering your HPV typing results (which subtypes detected, with risk classification), TCT findings (Bethesda System classification), and if you chose the $259 package: breast ultrasound findings, pelvic ultrasound findings, and discharge analysis results.

If your results show high-risk HPV or abnormal cytology: Our coordinating team contacts you directly to discuss next steps. This may include colposcopy (available at our partner hospitals), referral to a specialist, or guidance on what to request from your home country gynecologist. You will never receive an abnormal result without a clear follow-up pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve had the HPV vaccine. Do I still need screening?

Yes. The HPV vaccine protects against the most common high-risk types but does not cover all 14 oncogenic HPV types. Screening remains essential regardless of vaccination status — consistent with every major international guideline.

I’m post-menopausal. Is cervical screening still necessary?

Yes, up to age 65 (per US guidelines) or age 64 (per UK guidelines), provided you have a cervix. Post-menopausal women can still develop cervical abnormalities, and HPV infections acquired earlier in life can persist and progress after menopause.

Does the cervical exam hurt?

Most women describe the sensation as uncomfortable rather than painful. The speculum insertion and cervical cell collection take approximately 1–2 minutes. Our female physicians are practiced at minimizing discomfort — warm speculums, gentle technique, and clear verbal guidance throughout the process.

Can I combine this with other packages?

Absolutely. Many women add the $159 or $259 gynecological package to a gastrointestinal or cardiovascular package, creating a comprehensive screening visit. The additional time is minimal — approximately 30–45 minutes for the gynecological portion.

What if I’m menstruating on my appointment day?

Cervical screening is best performed when you’re not actively menstruating. If your period arrives unexpectedly, we can reschedule the gynecological portion within a few days at no additional charge — or you can complete all other tests on your scheduled day and return for the gynecological portion later in the week.
