Dental Costs: China vs Hong Kong (2026) — Implants, Crowns and Cleanings Compared

Hong Kong dental care is good and expensive. Mainland dental care at the same clinical standard costs a fraction, and the border is 40 minutes away. That combination produces a lot of half-informed advice, so this is the arithmetic with the numbers attached — including the cases where staying in Hong Kong is the better decision.

Side by side, 2026

Hong Kong figures are published clinic ranges. Mainland figures are SinoCareLink's coordinated prices, in US dollars, fixed before booking.

Treatment Hong Kong Mainland China
Scaling and polishing HKD 500–1,000 from $29
Deep cleaning / full-mouth scaling and root planing HKD 6,800–14,000 $129 (PMTC package)
Filling Varies widely by clinic from $139
Root canal Varies widely by clinic from $149
Zirconia crown HKD 6,000–8,000 from $149
Single implant, Korean system, crown included HKD 15,000–50,000 depending on clinic tier, implant system and whether grafting is needed from $799
Single implant, Straumann, crown included from $1,499
In-office whitening Varies widely by clinic $169
Dentures Varies widely by clinic from $420

Two honest caveats about the Hong Kong column. First, the implant range is wide because clinic tier drives it more than anything clinical — a Central practice and a neighbourhood practice quoting the same implant system can be a factor of two apart. Second, complex cases add to it: bone grafting or advanced hydrophilic implants typically add at least 30% in either market.

Why the gap is this wide

None of the drivers are clinical quality. They are the same structural forces that separate Hong Kong and mainland pricing across all of healthcare, set out in detail in why Hong Kong and Shenzhen hospital costs differ this much:

  • Labour. A Hong Kong dentist's hourly cost is several times the mainland equivalent, and that difference runs through nurses, assistants and administrators too.
  • Rent. Clinic space in Central or Causeway Bay is among the most expensive commercial property in the world. Futian, Tianhe or Jing'an is a different order of magnitude.
  • Lab work. Crowns, bridges and dentures are made in dental laboratories. Mainland labs — including ones that export to Western markets — sit inside the same city as the clinic, which removes both cost and turnaround time.
  • Implant system procurement. Mainland volume-based procurement reforms compressed implant fixture prices sharply. The same Straumann fixture is genuinely cheaper to buy.

What is not different: the implant systems themselves (Straumann, Dentium, Hiossen are the same products), CBCT imaging, and the surgical protocols.

Which mainland city

  • Shenzhen — the default for Hong Kong residents. Border to chair is under an hour, which makes staged treatment realistic rather than theoretical. See English-speaking dental clinics in Shenzhen and, if you are crossing for the weekend, cross-border dental from Hong Kong.
  • Guangzhou — an hour by high-speed rail, larger specialist base, similar pricing.
  • Shanghai or Beijing — worth it only if you are travelling there anyway. The dentistry is not better than Shenzhen's for routine work; the flight is the cost.

When Hong Kong is the right answer

Cost is not the only variable, and there are cases where crossing is the wrong call:

  • Dental emergencies. Acute pain, a lost crown, swelling — go local, immediately.
  • Treatment that needs frequent short visits. Orthodontics runs on monthly reviews. If every review is a border crossing, the time cost swamps the saving.
  • Work that is already underway. Splitting a treatment plan between two dentists in two systems creates a responsibility gap exactly when something goes wrong.
  • Simple scaling. A HKD 500–1,000 cleaning in Hong Kong is not worth a day trip. Bundle it with something else or do it locally.

What to check before you commit either way

  • Get the quote itemised in writing. Implant, abutment, crown and any grafting should be separate lines. A single number hides where the money goes in both markets.
  • Confirm the implant system and the crown material by name. "Korean implant" and "zirconia crown" are categories, not products.
  • Ask what happens afterwards. Implants are staged over three to six months. Establish before you start who reviews the healing and who handles a problem at month four.
  • Keep the record. Treatment notes, implant lot number and imaging on disc. That is what any dentist in either city needs to pick the case up.

Frequently asked questions

How much cheaper is dental work in China than Hong Kong?

For implants, typically a factor of several: a single implant with crown starts at $799 in mainland China against a Hong Kong range of roughly HKD 15,000–50,000 depending on clinic tier and system. For a routine scaling the gap is much smaller in absolute terms — HKD 500–1,000 against $29 — which is why simple cleanings are rarely worth a trip on their own.

Is the quality the same?

The implant systems, imaging and surgical protocols are the same products and the same procedures. What varies — in both markets — is the individual clinician and the laboratory. Judge the clinic, not the country.

Which is the best mainland city for Hong Kong residents?

Shenzhen, for one reason: under an hour from the border. Implants need a second visit three to six months later, and that only stays practical if the trip is short.

Can I finish dental work in a single trip?

Cleanings, whitening, fillings and most crown work, yes. Implants, no — placement and the final crown are separated by three to six months of osseointegration. Orthodontic treatment runs over months regardless.

What if there is a problem after I go home?

Ask for the treatment record, implant system and lot number, and imaging on disc before leaving. Any dentist can act on that. SinoCareLink keeps the same record and can go back to the treating clinic on your behalf.

Does Hong Kong insurance cover treatment in mainland China?

Some plans do and some do not, and the answer usually turns on whether the mainland hospital or clinic is inside the insurer's network. Confirm with your insurer in writing before treatment, and ask the clinic for an itemised English invoice regardless.
