Men's vs Women's Health Screening: What Actually Differs (and Why the Prices Differ)

Most of a health screening is the same whoever you are: bloods, liver and kidney function, lipids, glucose, thyroid, abdominal ultrasound, ECG, chest imaging. The differences are real but narrower than the marketing suggests — and they are concentrated in three places. This explains what they are, and why the women's package is priced higher.

What is identical

The core panel does not change by sex: full blood count, liver and kidney function, fasting glucose and HbA1c, a lipid panel, thyroid function, abdominal ultrasound covering liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen, thyroid ultrasound, ECG, and chest imaging. If a package differs from another package, that difference is almost never here.

Difference 1: cancer screening targets

This is the largest and most legitimate difference.

  • Women have two organ-specific screening pathways with clear guideline support: cervical screening (HPV genotyping with ThinPrep cytology) and breast screening (mammography, usually paired with ultrasound where breast tissue is dense). Both are established cancer-prevention tools, both are procedures, and both add cost.
  • Men have no equivalent pair. Prostate screening is the closest analogue, and it is deliberately handled differently: the US Preventive Services Task Force treats PSA testing as a shared decision between patient and clinician for men aged 55 to 69, and does not recommend routine screening at 70 and over. That is a conversation to have with a physician about your own risk — not a box that switches on at a birthday.

Colorectal screening applies to everyone from the same age, and lung screening is driven by smoking history rather than sex.

Difference 2: when cardiovascular risk starts mattering

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in both sexes — the difference is timing, not whether. Male risk rises earlier, which is why cardiac assessment tends to enter men's screening in the forties. Female risk climbs after menopause and then converges, which is why cardiac and metabolic screening becomes more important in women's fifties rather than being front-loaded. Practical consequence: the same coronary CT angiography or stress assessment is worth adding at different decades.

Difference 3: bone, iron and hormones

  • Bone density. Post-menopausal bone loss makes DEXA a standard part of women's screening from around 65, earlier with risk factors. In men it is driven by specific risk factors rather than by age alone.
  • Iron and anaemia. Menstruating women have a materially higher baseline risk of iron deficiency, so ferritin is more often worth including.
  • Thyroid disease is several times more common in women, which is why thyroid function and ultrasound carry more weight in a women's panel even though both appear in the core.

So why does the women's package cost more?
