Capsule Endoscopy in China: Magnetic Capsule Gastroscopy Explained

What is capsule endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy (胶囊内镜) means swallowing a vitamin-sized capsule containing a tiny camera instead of undergoing a conventional endoscope examination. In China's large checkup centres, the most common form is magnetically controlled capsule gastroscopy (磁控胶囊胃镜): you swallow the capsule with water, and a physician steers it inside your stomach with an external magnetic arm while images stream to a workstation.

How it differs from a conventional gastroscopy

  • No sedation, no intubation. You are awake, there is no tube down the throat, and you can usually return to your day immediately.
  • Typical examination time is short — the stomach portion generally takes well under an hour including preparation.
  • The capsule is single-use and passes naturally within days.
  • What it cannot do: a capsule cannot take a biopsy, remove a polyp or treat anything. If it finds something that needs a closer look or tissue sampling, a conventional gastroscopy is still required (NICE MIB104).
  • What the evidence shows so far: studies, mostly from China, found that the capsule picked up most of the stomach lesions that a standard gastroscopy found. NICE's 2017 briefing noted that this evidence may not apply directly to the NHS.
  • It is not suitable for everyone: it should not be used during pregnancy or by people with a pacemaker, another implanted electronic device or implanted metal parts, and it may not be suitable for people who have difficulty swallowing or a known narrowing of the gut.   • People who need a look at the stomach but cannot have, or prefer not to have, sedation
  • People whose schedule cannot absorb a sedated procedure and recovery time
  • People who are anxious about having a conventional endoscopy

Whether a capsule examination or a conventional (sedated, painless) gastroscopy is the right choice depends on your history and what your physician is looking for — a capsule can look at the stomach, but it is not a replacement for a gastroscopy.
