The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting runs 18–19 November 2026 in Shenzhen. But the Leaders' Meeting is two days inside a longer cluster — the APEC CEO Summit, the joint ministerial meeting of foreign and trade ministers, and the delegation programming around them. Most business attendees are in the city for the better part of a week.
Which means you will have gaps. Probably an arrival day that is softer than planned, a quiet stretch while leaders are in session, and a departure day with an evening flight.
Most "things to do in Shenzhen" lists are written for tourists with a week and no obligations. This one is organised the way a delegate's time actually works: by how long the gap is.
On locations relative to the summit. We do not sort this list by proximity to the venue, because as of August 2026 no official source has confirmed one. Several travel sites have published a specific location; Shenzhen municipal releases and APEC's own materials name the city, not a building. Check official channels closer to the date, and plan around the metro rather than around a venue you read about second-hand.
If you have under two hours
1. Go up the Ping An Finance Centre
Futian's supertall tower has an observation deck near the top — one of the highest publicly accessible viewpoints in China. On a clear day you can see across the city and toward Hong Kong.
It is the definitive "I have ninety minutes and want to feel like I saw Shenzhen" option: it is in the central business district, it is on the metro, and the whole thing including queuing is comfortably under two hours.
Check current opening hours and whether tickets need booking ahead — both have changed before.
2. Walk up Lianhuashan Park
A low hill in Futian with a path to the top and a view straight down the civic axis over the CBD. Free, open, takes about an hour round trip at an unhurried pace, and it is the single best place to understand how deliberately this city was laid out.
Popular with locals early in the morning and around sunset. If you are jet-lagged and awake at six, this is a better use of the time than the hotel gym.
3. Professional teeth whitening — 60 to 90 minutes
This is the treatment that genuinely fits a gap between meetings: one session, about an hour, no recovery period, and you can fly the same day. In-office whitening in Shenzhen costs $169 — a fraction of what it costs in the US, UK or Australia — and if you need it inside three days there is an Urgent option at +US$100.

4. Huaqiangbei electronics markets
Several city blocks of component markets, repair stalls and gadget vendors in Futian. Whether this is fascinating or overwhelming depends entirely on you, but it is genuinely unlike anywhere else, and an hour of wandering costs nothing.
Bring a working mobile payment setup. Cash and foreign cards are not the norm here.
If you have half a day
5. A comprehensive health screening
The single most useful thing most business travellers can do with a spare morning in China.
A full screening — bloods, imaging, physical assessment and the associated consultations — is a half-day on site, usually starting early and fasting. Screening in China costs substantially less than the equivalent in most Western countries and is generally far quicker to book.
Two honest caveats, because they change whether this is worth doing:
- The written report takes 1–3 weeks. You will be home before it arrives. That is how the timeline genuinely works, and any provider offering same-day results is describing something narrower than a complete report.
- Anything urgent is communicated immediately, not held for the report.
If you have been putting off a check-up because booking one at home is a six-week exercise, a spare morning during a week you were travelling anyway is a rational time to do it.

6. OCT-LOFT
A former industrial complex in Nanshan converted into a district of galleries, design studios, bookshops and cafés. Low-key, walkable, and the most pleasant place in the city to spend an afternoon that does not involve a shopping mall.
Good for an informal meeting that is not a hotel lobby.
7. Shenzhen Bay Park and the coastal path
A long waterfront park running along the bay between Futian and Nanshan, with a walking and cycling path, mangrove wetlands, and views across the water toward Hong Kong.
Half a day if you walk a decent stretch of it; an hour if you just want air. In November the weather is usually ideal for this — the summer heat has broken and it is comfortable outdoors.

Beyond whitening, several treatments are genuinely single-visit and fit a half-day:

Implants are not a summit-week treatment — the standard pathway is about four months across two visits. But the assessment and first stage can be done on this trip, which is a reasonable use of a morning if it is something you have been deferring.

If you have a full day
9. Cross into Hong Kong
Shenzhen borders Hong Kong, and both main land crossings connect directly to the metro network. There is also high-speed rail between the two cities.
A day trip is entirely feasible, and a lot of delegates build one in at either end of the summit. Two things to plan for: it is a separate immigration process with its own entry requirements for your nationality, and border queues during a major international event are unpredictable. Do not schedule this against a hard commitment the same evening.
10. Shekou and the western waterfront
The old port area in Nanshan, now a waterfront district of restaurants and bars with a long-established international community. It is the most relaxed evening in the city and the easiest place to eat well without a reservation and without a translation app.
A full day if you combine it with Shenzhen Bay Park; an evening on its own.
Practical notes for the week
Use the metro. Shenzhen's system is extensive, signed in English, and — during a week with heavy security and traffic management in parts of the city — far more predictable than road transport.
Sort payments before you land. Mobile payment is the default nearly everywhere. The major Chinese payment apps now support international cards, but set it up and test it before you need it in a queue, and carry some cash as backup.
Sort connectivity before you land. Roaming package or eSIM. Some widely used international services are not accessible on ordinary mainland connections — check with your IT team about what your organisation supports.
Carry your passport. Required for hotel registration and for registering as a patient at any medical facility.
Expect the weather to be pleasant. Mid-November in Shenzhen is usually mild and comfortable — the summer heat and humidity have normally broken. Bring a light layer for evenings and for heavily air-conditioned interiors.
Book anything medical before you arrive. Three days is the normal lead time; a summit week is not when to test it.
