Lung cancer LDCT screening in China

You Smoked for 10 Years. Here's the Lung Screening You Need — and Why China Offers It Best

If you smoked for a decade — or even if you quit five years ago — your lungs carry a history that your body hasn’t entirely forgotten. Lung cancer doesn’t announce itself early. By the time most patients notice symptoms, the disease has often progressed to Stage 3 or 4, where survival rates drop dramatically. The five-year survival rate for lung cancer detected at Stage 1 is 56–73%. At Stage 4, it falls to 5–10%.

The screening technology that catches lung cancer early — low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) — exists and is effective. The National Lung Screening Trial demonstrated a 20% reduction in lung cancer mortality among high-risk adults screened with LDCT compared to chest X-ray. The USPSTF recommends annual LDCT screening for adults aged 50–80 with a 20-pack-year smoking history.

But in practice, access remains a problem. Let’s explain why — and how we’ve solved it.

The Cost Problem: Why Former Smokers Skip LDCT

  • Medicare covers LDCT for eligible beneficiaries — but only with specific documentation, and many recipients still face co-pays of $50–$150 per scan
  • Private insurance coverage varies widely. Many plans don’t cover LDCT unless you meet exact USPSTF criteria. If you’re outside the guideline window, you pay out-of-pocket

Self-pay LDCT costs $200–$900 depending on facility and location. Hospital outpatient settings typically charge $500–$900.

In the UK, LDCT for lung cancer screening is not yet part of the national NHS screening program (as of 2024, only targeted pilot programs exist). For patients outside these pilot areas, accessing LDCT means either a long NHS wait or private fees of £300–£800.

Here’s the broader problem: LDCT alone doesn’t give you a complete picture of your lung health. It detects structural abnormalities — nodules, masses, suspicious densities. But it doesn’t tell you how well your lungs function, whether you have obstructive airway disease, or whether you’re experiencing sleep-disordered breathing that puts additional strain on your cardiovascular system.

Our $399 Lung Function Deep Screening Package was designed to fill that gap — comprehensively.

What You Get: The Complete $399 Lung Package

This isn’t just a CT scan. It’s a full pulmonary health assessment — structural imaging plus functional testing plus biomarker screening — all completed in a single day.

General & Physical Assessment

  1. General health assessment
  2. Internal medicine examination
  3. Surgical examination

Comprehensive Blood Panel

  1. Complete blood count (CBC)
  2. Liver function — 3-item panel
  3. Kidney function — 3-item panel
  4. Thyroid function — 3-item panel
  5. Fasting blood glucose (GLU)

Lung Cancer Biomarkers

  1. Lung cancer three-marker panel — NSE, CYFRA 21-1, and ProGRP. These complement LDCT imaging: while LDCT identifies structural anomalies, these blood markers help differentiate between benign and malignant lesions.

Urinary & Stool Analysis

  1. Urinalysis
  2. Stool routine + occult blood test

Cardiac Baseline

  1. 12-lead ECG

Core Lung Imaging & Diagnostics

  1. Low-dose CT of the chest (LDCT) — approximately 1–1.5 mSv radiation, identifies pulmonary nodules, masses, and mediastinal abnormalities
  2. Pulmonary function testing (PFT) — measures FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio. Diagnoses obstructive diseases (COPD, asthma) and restrictive conditions that LDCT alone cannot assess
  3. Overnight sleep monitoring (sleep apnea screening) — conducted during an overnight hospital stay using multi-channel polysomnography monitoring. Detects obstructive sleep apnea. THE OVERNIGHT HOSPITAL STAY IS INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE PRICE — no additional accommodation charges.

Why Sleep Apnea Screening Matters

Obstructive sleep apnea affects approximately 25–30% of men and 10–15% of women over 40, with prevalence significantly higher among former smokers and overweight individuals. OSA doubles your risk of stroke, triples your risk of heart attack, and is independently associated with type 2 diabetes and cognitive decline.

In the US, a full polysomnography sleep study costs $1,000–$3,000 at a sleep center. Home sleep tests ($150–$500) are less reliable for moderate-to-severe cases.

In the UK, NHS sleep clinics have waiting lists of 6–18 months. Private sleep studies cost £500–£1,500.

Our package includes full overnight polysomnography-style sleep monitoring in a hospital setting — at no additional cost beyond the $399 package price, and the hospital overnight stay is included. One trip. One package. One complete dataset.

The One-Day Advantage: How It Works Logistically

Your appointment day looks like this:

  • Morning (8:00–12:00): Check-in, blood draws, physical examination, pulmonary function testing, ECG, and LDCT scan. Complete intake questionnaire for sleep monitoring setup.
  • Afternoon (13:00–17:00): Review of preliminary blood results, physician consultation, and preparation for overnight monitoring.
  • Evening → Morning (overnight): Sleep monitoring in a comfortable hospital room with continuous nursing supervision. Monitoring equipment is lightweight and minimally intrusive.
  • Next morning (8:00–9:00): Monitoring equipment removed, discharge briefing, and departure. Free to travel or resume normal activities immediately.

The entire package — all daytime tests plus overnight monitoring — is completed in one daytime session plus one overnight stay. No second visits. No follow-up appointments for missing tests.

Who Should Consider This Package?

Primary candidates:

  • Former smokers with a 10+ pack-year history (even if you quit years ago — lung cancer risk remains elevated for 15+ years after cessation)
  • Current smokers who want a baseline assessment regardless of readiness to quit
  • Adults with a family history of lung cancer, especially if a parent or sibling was diagnosed before age 60
  • Long-term exposure to air pollution or occupational dust/chemical fumes

Secondary candidates:

  • Anyone with chronic respiratory symptoms — persistent cough, wheezing, recurrent bronchitis, or shortness of breath
  • Adults over 50 regardless of smoking history — lung cancer incidence increases significantly with age
  • Patients with known COPD who haven’t had recent imaging or function testing
  • Anyone who snores heavily, wakes gasping, or experiences persistent daytime fatigue — classic sleep apnea symptoms

What Happens After Your Results?

Within 3–5 business days, you receive a comprehensive English-translated report including LDCT findings (any nodules described by size, location, density, and Lung-RADS classification), PFT results (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC ratio alongside predicted normal values), sleep monitoring analysis (AHI, oxygen desaturation events, sleep architecture summary), all blood marker results with reference ranges, and a summary physician letter.

If your LDCT reveals a suspicious nodule (Lung-RADS 3 or 4): Our coordinating team contacts you directly, arranges specialist pulmonology consultation, and provides clear guidance on whether follow-up imaging, biopsy, or specialist referral is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is low-dose CT safe? What about radiation?

LDCT for lung screening uses approximately 1–1.5 mSv of radiation — about 2–6 months of natural background radiation exposure. This is roughly 1/6th of a standard diagnostic chest CT and is considered very safe for annual screening in the target age group.

I quit smoking 10 years ago. Do I still need screening?

Yes. The USPSTF recommends LDCT for anyone who quit within the past 15 years with a 20-pack-year history. But even beyond the formal guideline window, baseline screening is clinically valuable regardless of when you quit.

What is a “pack-year”?

One pack-year = smoking one pack (20 cigarettes) per day for one year. 1 pack/day for 10 years = 10 pack-years. 2 packs/day for 5 years also = 10 pack-years.

What happens if the sleep test shows sleep apnea?

You’ll receive a detailed report classifying severity and recommendations for treatment. The most common treatment is CPAP therapy, which can be arranged either in China or through your home country sleep specialist using our diagnostic data.

Can I do the daytime tests without the overnight sleep monitoring?

The sleep monitoring is a core component. However, if you have specific constraints, we can discuss alternative arrangements — please mention this during booking.

What should I avoid before the appointment?

No special preparation for LDCT or PFT beyond avoiding heavy exercise on the morning of your appointment. For sleep monitoring, avoid alcohol and caffeine after noon on the testing day.
