Coronary CT angiography heart screening in China

Coronary CT Angiography in the US Costs $1,500+. In China, It's Part of a $399 Heart Package.

Cardiovascular disease kills more people globally than any other condition. It accounts for 1 in 3 deaths in the United States and 1 in 4 in the UK. Yet the most powerful diagnostic tool we have for catching it early — coronary CT angiography (CTA) — remains out of reach for millions of adults who need it most.

Not because the technology doesn't exist. Not because doctors don't recommend it. But because the price and wait times in Western healthcare systems turn a potentially life-saving test into a financial decision most people quietly avoid.

We'd like to change that conversation.

What Is Coronary CT Angiography — and Why Does It Matter?

Coronary CTA is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses a high-speed CT scanner to create detailed 3D images of the arteries supplying your heart. Unlike a standard ECG or even a stress test, coronary CTA can directly visualize plaque buildup in your coronary arteries — including the "soft" non-calcified plaques that are most prone to rupture and cause heart attacks, but that older tests completely miss.

The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology now recommend coronary CTA as a first-line diagnostic tool for patients with stable chest pain and intermediate cardiovascular risk. It's not experimental. It's the standard of care — it's just not accessible at a price most people can afford.

Here's what's standing in the way.

The Real Cost of Heart Screening in the US and UK

United States

For most Americans without insurance coverage specifically for this test (or facing a high deductible), coronary CTA is a significant out-of-pocket expense:

  • Coronary CTA scan itself: $800 – $2,500 (facility fees vary widely; hospital outpatient typically at the high end)
  • Cardiologist consultation (required for referral): $250 – $600
  • Cardiac echocardiogram (heart ultrasound): $500 – $1,500
  • Carotid artery ultrasound: $300 – $800
  • Arterial stiffness assessment: Rarely available; specialized vascular labs charge $400–$1,200
  • Cardiac biomarker blood panel (troponin, BNP, etc.): $200 – $500

Total if assembled individually: $2,550 – $7,100+

Even for patients with insurance, co-pays, out-of-network fees, and the requirement for specialist referrals before each test routinely push total costs to $1,500–$3,000 or more.

United Kingdom

For NHS patients, the situation is different in cost structure but equally frustrating in access:

  • Coronary CTA on the NHS requires a referral, cardiology assessment, and typically waits 3–9 months for a non-urgent appointment
  • Patients seeking faster access through private healthcare (BUPA, AXA, or self-pay) face costs of £600 – £1,800 for the scan alone, plus consultation fees

Our $399 Cardiovascular Specialty Package: What's Included

Our package was designed around a simple principle: heart disease doesn't develop in isolation, and neither should your screening. Every component was chosen because it contributes meaningfully to a complete cardiovascular risk picture — not to pad a list, but because together they tell a story your cardiologist can actually act on.

Wait Times: When "Fast" Is a Matter of Life and Death

Cardiovascular events don't follow appointment schedules. The clinical value of screening is highest when it happens before symptoms become serious — which means the waiting game is not neutral.

Country Wait for Coronary CTA (non-urgent)
United States 3 – 10 weeks (varies significantly by region and provider)
United Kingdom (NHS) 3 – 9 months
United Kingdom (Private) 1 – 4 weeks
Our China partner hospitals 3 – 7 business days

For patients with moderate-to-high risk profiles — known hypertension, type 2 diabetes, a family history of heart disease, or prior abnormal lipid results — waiting months for definitive coronary imaging isn't a minor inconvenience. It's a clinical hazard.

Why Is This Package So Much Cheaper in China?

This is the first question thoughtful patients ask, and it deserves a direct answer.

It is not because Chinese hospitals cut corners on equipment or clinical staff. The CT scanners used for coronary CTA in our partner hospitals are Siemens and GE high-definition multi-slice systems — the same platforms used in top US academic medical centers.

The cost difference comes from:

1. Structural pricing differences. Chinese hospitals operate under a fundamentally different cost structure than US facilities. There are no multi-million-dollar malpractice insurance premiums baked into every procedure fee. There are no intermediary billing companies, prior authorization administrators, or insurance contract negotiators adding overhead at every step. You pay the clinical cost — not the administrative superstructure layered on top of it.

2. Volume efficiency. Our partner cardiology centers perform several hundred cardiovascular screening packages per month. At this volume, the per-unit cost of imaging time, contrast agents, and cardiologist reading time drops significantly compared to a US specialist practice that might perform a few coronary CTAs per week.

3. Currency and labor economics. Radiologists, cardiologists, and ultrasound technicians in China are highly trained professionals who are compensated at rates that reflect the local cost of living — not the US or UK salary benchmarks. This doesn't mean lower skill. It means the same level of training costs less to deliver in a different economy.

Who Is This Package For?

The Cardiovascular Specialty Package is most valuable for adults who fall into one or more of these categories:

By age and gender:
- Men over 40 with any additional risk factor
- Women over 45 (post-menopausal or approaching menopause)
- Anyone over 50 regardless of current symptoms

By risk factors:
- Family history of heart attack, stroke, or coronary artery disease before age 60
- Diagnosed or borderline hypertension
- Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
- Current or former smoker (including social/occasional smoking)
- High LDL cholesterol or history of dyslipidemia
- Overweight/obese with sedentary lifestyle
- Known to have elevated CRP or other inflammatory markers

By symptoms (even mild or intermittent):
- Occasional chest tightness or pressure, especially with exertion
- Unexplained shortness of breath during routine activity
- Persistent fatigue that seems disproportionate to your activity level
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat episodes

Even if you have zero symptoms and feel perfectly healthy — particularly if you're over 50 — baseline coronary CTA data is valuable. Heart disease is frequently silent until it isn't, and having a documented baseline now gives your physicians a comparison point if anything changes.

What Happens After Your Results?

A written report covering all 19 examination items is delivered within 3–5 business days, in both Chinese and English. The report includes:

  • A detailed imaging report from a board-certified radiologist covering your coronary CTA findings (with Coronary Artery Disease Reporting & Data System / CAD-RADS scoring)
  • Echocardiography results including ejection fraction and valve assessment
  • Carotid imaging findings with stenosis grading if applicable
  • All blood panel results with reference ranges and flagged abnormal values
  • A summary physician letter suitable for sharing with your cardiologist or primary care physician at home

If your coronary CTA reveals significant stenosis (>50%) or other findings requiring prompt attention, our coordinating team will contact you directly and assist with arranging specialist follow-up — either continued in China or with guidance on what to request from your home country cardiologist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is coronary CTA safe? How much radiation does it involve?
Modern high-definition coronary CTA uses dose-modulation technology that keeps effective radiation exposure to approximately 3–5 mSv — roughly equivalent to 1–2 years of natural background radiation. This is significantly lower than older generation CT protocols and is considered clinically acceptable for the diagnostic benefit provided.

I take a beta-blocker for hypertension. Does that affect the scan?
Beta-blockers actually help coronary CTA quality by lowering heart rate, which reduces motion artifact. We'll review your current medications during the health intake process and provide specific guidance. For patients not already on beta-blockers, short-acting heart rate control medication before the scan is standard protocol if needed.

What about contrast dye allergy?
Coronary CTA uses iodinated contrast. A history of contrast allergy or kidney impairment requires pre-assessment. Please note this on your intake form and we will advise accordingly — pre-medication protocols can manage most mild-to-moderate contrast sensitivities.

Can I get the raw imaging data (DICOM files)?
Yes. Digital DICOM files of all imaging studies are provided on request (USB or secure download link), allowing your cardiologist at home to review the actual images rather than just the written report.

How long does the full appointment take?
For the cardiovascular package, expect approximately 5–7 hours for the full appointment, including check-in, blood draws, ECG, ultrasounds, and CT imaging. The coronary CTA itself takes about 15 minutes, but the preparation and monitoring period extends the visit.

Closing Thought

The cardiologists who will read your coronary CTA trained at the same institutions, read the same journals, and follow the same international clinical guidelines as their counterparts in the US or UK. The CT scanner is the same brand. The contrast protocol is the same. The diagnostic accuracy is the same.

What's different is the bill at the end.

Heart disease doesn't give you a warning before the first event in one out of every three cases. Don't let the cost of prevention become the reason you find out too late.
