What it actually involves, how many visits it takes, and what to ask before you commit
"Smile makeover" is a marketing term, not a procedure. It describes any combination of cosmetic dental treatments planned together to change how your teeth look as a set — most commonly veneers, whitening, crowns, composite bonding and gum contouring, in some mix.
That vagueness is the problem. Two clinics can quote you a "smile makeover" and be describing completely different amounts of work, different amounts of irreversible tooth preparation, and different numbers of trips.

The first question: how much is reversible?
Before price, before timeline, before anything: cosmetic dental treatments differ enormously in how much of your natural tooth they remove, and that is permanent.
Roughly ordered from least to most invasive:

This matters because a great deal of international "Hollywood smile" marketing quietly means crowns on healthy teeth. Crowning a healthy tooth to change its colour or shape removes a large amount of sound tooth structure permanently, and commits you to replacing those crowns every 10–15 years for the rest of your life.
Sometimes crowns are genuinely the right answer — heavily filled, cracked or root-treated teeth often need them. But "we'll do 20 crowns" as a cosmetic default is a red flag, not a package deal.

What combines well
Most realistic smile makeovers are smaller than the marketing suggests.

Whitening plus a few veneers. A common combination: whiten the natural teeth to the target shade, then veneer only the specific teeth that are chipped, misshapen or discoloured beyond what whitening can reach. Veneers across the visible zone. The recognisable "smile makeover." Typically 8–10 upper teeth, sometimes with the lower arch as well.
Orthodontics first, then cosmetics. If the underlying issue is alignment rather than colour or shape, straightening the teeth first often means far fewer veneers afterwards — or none. This takes months to years, so it is a different kind of decision.
Restorative work first. Untreated decay, gum disease or failing old fillings are dealt with before any cosmetic work. A veneer over an unstable foundation fails.

A realistic single-trip case is a full veneer set: consultation and design, preparation, temporaries, then fitting — around 7–10 days in country.
What does not compress: anything involving implants (about four months), and anything where you want to whiten first and match veneers to the new shade — the enamel needs to stabilise for a couple of weeks after whitening before the final shade is chosen. Rushing that is how people end up with a mismatch they cannot undo.
Veneers on a short business trip — including APEC week
If you are in Shenzhen for a conference or a summit rather than for treatment, the honest answer is that a full veneer case and a five-day business trip do not fit together — and you should be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise.
What does fit, and is genuinely worth doing:
The assessment and the plan. A consultation with photographs, imaging and a written, itemised treatment plan is a single appointment. You leave knowing exactly how many teeth, which material, how many trips, how long, and what it costs — which is the part most people spend months failing to get a straight answer on. Appointments can generally be arranged at short notice.
Whitening, if that turns out to be the answer. A few composite repairs. Chips and small defects can often be handled with composite bonding in a single visit, without committing to veneers at all.
What to do with the plan afterwards: treat the trip as the diagnostic step. You go home with a written quote and a defined schedule, and you book the treatment trip when it suits you. - Why was the less invasive option ruled out?

- What is the sequence, and where does whitening fall in it? If whitening is happening after the veneers are made, the shade will not match.
- What happens if something needs adjusting after I fly home? Get the warranty terms and the follow-up arrangement in writing.

Should I whiten before or after veneers?

Can I get it all done in one trip?

Do veneers last forever?
No. They have a finite lifespan and eventually need replacing, and because the underlying tooth has been prepared, you are committed to having something on it from then on. This is worth understanding before rather than after.

Ask before treatment and get it in writing — warranty terms, who you contact, and what is covered. This matters more for cross-border patients than for local ones and is routinely glossed over.
