Dental Implants in China: The Full Process and Timeline (How Many Trips, How Long Between)
The question that decides whether treatment in China is practical for you is not the price. It is how many trips and how long between them. This page answers both properly, including the parts people find out too late.
The short version
- Two trips minimum, three at most. A single implant with immediate provisional, and All-on-4 with immediate loading, are two-trip treatments. Staged (non-immediate) protocols are three.
- The gap between trips is three to six months — unless you choose a hydrophilic implant surface, which brings it down to one to two months. This is the single most useful decision you make.
- Shanghai needs one clinic visit on the second trip; other cities need two, separated by two to four weeks. That difference decides how long your second stay has to be.
How many trips, and how many clinic visits
Assuming any extraction is already done and your records and tests are complete:

The pre-travel remote consultation does not count as a clinic visit, and neither does the post-treatment review — that is done by video or photographs.
What actually happens, trip by trip
For the most common case — a single implant with an immediate provisional crown:
- Before you fly: remote consultation, with your tests and imaging done at home.
- Trip 1, visit 1: implant placement and a temporary crown fitted the same day. In Shanghai the impression is also taken at this visit.
- Waiting period: three to six months for osseointegration — one to two months with a hydrophilic implant.
- Trip 2, Shanghai: one visit — restoration, impression and the final crown.
- Trip 2, other cities: two visits — impression, bite registration and shade matching first, then the final crown fitted two to four weeks later.
- Afterwards: remote review. No further travel.
That last difference is the honest reason we usually suggest Shanghai for implant work: it removes a two-to-four-week wait from your second stay.
The waiting period is a choice, not a fixed cost
Implant surfaces are either hydrophilic or they are not, and it changes the healing window by months:

If you are taking leave from work or flying long-haul, paying more for a hydrophilic surface usually buys back two to four months of elapsed time. If your schedule is flexible, it is a genuine saving to skip it. Two things that catch people out
- All-on-4 with immediate loading, on two visits, gives you a resin provisional bridge — not the final one. The titanium framework with full-ceramic teeth requires a third clinic visit, two to four weeks after the second. If a quote is silent on this, ask.
- Significant bone grafting changes the arithmetic. Where a sinus lift with extensive grafting is needed, healing can run four to six months rather than three, and the trip count above does not apply. This is decided from your CT scan, before anything is booked.
What to prepare before the remote consultation
Required:
- Full blood count, coagulation panel, liver and kidney function, infectious disease screening
- A periodontal assessment and any basic treatment — ideally a cleaning or periodontal therapy about two months before you travel
- A CT scan and a 3D intraoral scan. These are what the surgeon plans from; without them nothing can be confirmed
Useful to have: temporomandibular joint and occlusion assessment.
